Home row keys: the foundation of typing
Master these eight keys and everything else on the keyboard falls into place.
If touch typing were a building, the home row would be its foundation. It is the row of keys where your fingers rest between keystrokes, and it is the reference point from which you reach every other key. Get comfortable here and the rest of the keyboard becomes easy.
What are the home row keys?
The home row is the middle row of letter keys. Your fingers rest on:
- Left hand: A (little finger), S (ring finger), D (middle finger), F (index finger).
- Right hand: J (index finger), K (middle finger), L (ring finger), ; (little finger).
- Thumbs: both rest lightly on the space bar.
The secret of the F and J bumps
Look closely at your keyboard and you will find small raised bumps on the F and J keys. They exist so your two index fingers can locate the home row by touch alone, without looking down. Every time your hands leave the keyboard, use those bumps to re-anchor. This tiny habit is what makes typing without looking possible.
How the home row works
From the home position, every key is reached by a specific finger, which then returns home. For example, your left middle finger presses D on the home row, reaches up for E and down for C, and comes straight back to D. Because each finger has a defined territory, your hands stay oriented and you never have to search.
Simple home row drills
Start slowly and keep your eyes on the screen. Try these in order:
- Type the home row itself repeatedly:
asdf jkl; asdf jkl; - Type simple home-row words:
a sad lad; a lass asks dad; all fall - Add G and H (reached by the index fingers):
a glad gaff; had half a flask - Only once these feel natural, move to the top and bottom rows.
Our first lessons walk you through exactly this progression with a live on-screen keyboard that highlights the next key, and the keyboard guide shows the full finger map in colour.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Looking down. Use the F and J bumps instead; trust your fingers.
- Not returning home. Always bring fingers back to the home row after each reach.
- Rushing. Accuracy first. Speed comes once the movements are automatic.
Spend a few short sessions truly owning the home row and you will be amazed how quickly the rest of the keyboard follows.
